The History of Groveland Cottage
|
Groveland Cottage was built in 1886, over 120 years ago. Mr. Seal was a local business man and
merchant in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, along with his wife raised three daughters in this
impressive home. Mr. Seal added the "Great Room" when his wife and daughters sailed to England
in the early 1900's as a surprise for them when they returned. Groveland Cottage has had several
owners since Mr. Seal and family. Simone Nichols the current owner purchased the home in 1987
being the fifth owner. Simone has updated the house to accommodate the bed and breakfast traveler.
The upstairs has four bedrooms. All the bedrooms now have their own bath. As much of the original
decor as possible has been saved.
The "Great Room" for many years (since 1950) housed a country type store. Simone continued to run
the store along with the bed and breakfast until 1996, but has now restored the room back to its
original purpose, a grand dining/living/gathering room. The Seals used to host many a fine party
in this large room with its 12 foot ceiling. The original river rock fireplace still dominates
the north wall and the original stained glass slider doors are still present and forever beautiful.
Simone can help you arrange local catering for your special event. The Great Room can accommodate
up to 40 guests for dinner. This makes an ideal room for business meetings, small weddings,
anniversary parties, teas, workshops, only the imagination can stop the list from growing. Simone
can also host special events such as Guest Chef dinners, holiday parties etc.
Groveland Cottage is an ideal place for family reunions, and special arrangements can be made to
rent the entire B&B. Simone has the 4 bedrooms upstairs as well as the "Secret Room" hidden in
the gardens behind the main building. Additionally, Simone manages over 50 private vacation rental
houses in and around the Sequim-Dungeness Valley and Port Angeles. The Great Room provides an
excellent gathering place for meals and parties for the entire family group.
The grounds consists of an acre, nearly all of which is devoted to gardens. There is a lovely
gazebo in the back yard with a creek bordering the property. Fruit trees, raspberry patch, flowers
everywhere. There is also an outside barbecue area available for guest use. Bird watchers are always
amazed at the endless song in the yard. Coveys of quail, American Goldfinches, Purple finches,
swallows on the swoop, ducks in the creek, wood peckers, humming birds, and many more visit the
feeders and the gardens all year round.
